Chatham is the world's most complete example of an Historic Dockyard from the age of sail - a time when Dockyards were the industrial centres of Europe.
Chatham Dockyard and its defences are now on the UK Government's shortlist of potential World Heritage Sites.
The UK proposes one World Heritage Site a year and could forward Chatham's application in 2011.
Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, English Heritage, Medway Council and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) are financing and backing this World Heritage Site application.
